Bila dicelup kedalam ai,r baik air asin maupun air tawar, Electrofish akan memancarkan signal electronik yang menyerupai signal ikan yang terluka.

Radius signal electrofish diair tawar +/- 200 m sedangkan diair laut +/- 1,5 km karena air laut mengandung garam sebagai penghantar listrik.
